In the past, Korea's scientific community has been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that it could give the movement more credibility. But silence is no longer an option.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which may lead to variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. Such a variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. While some creationists are not Christian but many are. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way that is described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.

Both kinds of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of students in biology found that half didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This led to an interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
